Sports Internships

Sports internships: timing, programs, and converting to full time

There are 402 open sports internships across 118 organizations.

Internships are the single most common entry point into a sports career, and for most functions they are less optional than they sound. They are aimed at students and recent graduates, but plenty of career-changers use them to get a first credential in the industry. The strongest programs are structured: a defined cohort, a real manager, actual responsibility, and a genuine shot at converting to full time.

Timing matters more than people expect. Internships run on cohort calendars (summer, fall, and spring), and the best programs recruit months ahead, so a summer role is often filled by late winter. Build your search around those windows rather than waiting for a posting to appear. The NBA and NHL tend to carry the highest internship volume at any given time, with strong programs across MLS and the NFL as well, while baseball internships cluster in the offseason.

Treat the internship as the audition it is. The interns who convert are the ones who are reliable, low ego, and useful from week one, and who build real relationships before the term ends. Apply directly through each team's careers page, target more than one cohort window, and apply early.
