The Sporting Communications Internship offers hands-on experience inside the communications department of a professional sports organization, supporting D.C. United of Major League Soccer and DC Power FC of the Gainbridge Super League. Working closely with the communications team, you will be embedded in the game day cycle for both clubs: researching and writing match previews, compiling game notes and statistics, drafting post-match recaps, supporting press conferences and media operations at Audi Field, and helping tell the stories of both teams to local and national media.
Spring 2027 is a unique moment for the sport in Washington. D.C. United will compete in the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, a condensed 14-match campaign running February through May with seven home matches at Audi Field and a single-elimination playoff, before MLS transitions to a summer-to-spring calendar. At the same time, DC Power FC will be in the heart of their Gainbridge Super League season. Interns will cover both clubs from the first kick to the final whistle, with a significant portion of their hours spent at Audi Field on game days and around first-team training.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Write and edit sporting communications content for D.C. United and DC Power FC, including match previews, post-match recaps and facts, game notes and game guides.
2. Research and maintain team and player statistics, records, milestones and historical data for use in publications and media pitches.
3. Support matchday media operations at Audi Field for both clubs, including press box setup, credential check-in, mixed zone and press conference coordination, and distribution of starting lineups and post-match materials.
4. Assist with media logistics for first-team training, open practices, pre-match and post-match press conferences, and player and coach interviews.
5. Develop storylines and pitch ideas to support media coverage of players, coaches and upcoming matches.
6. Monitor and report on coverage of both clubs across traditional and digital media.
7. Perform other duties as assigned by the Communications department.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
1. How a professional communications department covers a season from end to end, from the preview to the final whistle to the recap, across two clubs with different leagues, rosters and media audiences.
2. How to research, write and edit under deadline, producing accurate, polished game notes, previews and recaps on a compressed weekly cycle during the MLS Sprint Season.
3. How home matches, events and first-team training are covered by the media, how a press box and mixed zone operate, and how information is disseminated on game day.
4. How to work alongside the content, marketing and first-team staff to deliver a unified message aligned with the broader goals of the organization.
EXPERIENCE
1. Must be currently enrolled in college and seek credit for the internship.
2. Strong writing and editorial skills, with an interest in sports journalism, public relations or communications.
3. Working knowledge of soccer, including an understanding of statistics, tactics and league structures, is strongly preferred.
4. Experience in sports communications or student media preferred, but not required.
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required. Familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is preferred but not required.
6. Availability for nights and weekends during the spring season is essential.
7. A cover letter is required. Applications submitted without one will not be considered.
This is an unpaid, for credit internship (proof that you will receive credit is required).
You must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Because of the cyclical nature of the entertainment industry, your assigned hours may vary to reflect our needs (includes nights and weekends).
