Hockey Jobs

Working in hockey: a smaller market with real doors

There are 546 open hockey roles across 62 organizations.

Hockey's job market is smaller than the NFL's or NBA's, and that cuts both ways: fewer postings at any moment, but thinner applicant pools than the giant leagues draw. Because many NHL clubs operate their own arenas, the business side skews toward venue work - event operations, premium service, and the year-round concert and show calendar that keeps buildings staffed well beyond 41 home games.

The NHL consistently carries one of the highest internship volumes in pro sports in our tracking, which makes it one of the best leagues to target for a first job. Hockey operations and analytics came to the data wave later than baseball or basketball, and clubs are still building those groups out - a genuine opening for technical candidates who actually know the sport.

Geography matters more in hockey than in any other league: a quarter of the league sits in Canada and northern US markets dominate the rest, so be honest with yourself about where you are willing to live. The AHL affiliate network hires across the same functions and is a legitimate first rung. Apply directly through each club's careers page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a career in hockey?

Internships are the strongest door - the NHL carries one of the highest internship volumes in pro sports in our tracking - alongside sales and service roles and arena event work, since many clubs run their own buildings.

Is hockey analytics a good field to target?

It's less saturated than baseball or basketball analytics: NHL clubs came to the data wave later and are still building those groups out, which is a genuine opening for technical candidates who know the sport.

Do hockey jobs require living in Canada or the northern US?

Mostly yes for club roles - a quarter of the league is in Canada and northern markets dominate the rest. The league office is in New York, and AHL affiliate clubs widen the map somewhat.
