Working in the AHL: one level below the NHL, with a front office of its own

AHL clubs hire across ticket sales, corporate partnerships, marketing, game presentation, and broadcast, with season-long internships at most clubs.

The American Hockey League is 32 clubs, each affiliated with an NHL team. It is the level directly below the NHL, and the NHL team supplies the players and coaches. The club runs the business: tickets, sponsors, game presentation, broadcasts, and community work.

Some AHL clubs are owned by their NHL parent and some are independently owned. Where the NHL team owns the club, a role may be posted by the parent company, so it is worth checking both. Front offices are smaller than in the NHL, so one person covers more ground. Most openings are in ticket and group sales, corporate partnerships, marketing, content and video, and broadcast.

Internships and entry-level sales roles are the usual way in, and many full-time hires come from them. The season runs from October into the spring, so clubs do much of their hiring over the summer. This page leaves out game day and part-time roles such as ice crew and promotions staff, which clubs fill locally. Apply directly to each club, where these roles post first.

Frequently asked questions

What jobs do AHL clubs hire for?

Mostly business roles: ticket and group sales, corporate partnerships, marketing, content and video, broadcast, and game presentation. Front offices are small, so most roles cover more than one area.

How do I get a job in the AHL?

Internships and entry-level ticket sales are the usual ways in, and clubs often hire full-time staff from their interns. Most hiring happens over the summer, before the season starts in October.

Do AHL clubs hire hockey operations staff?

Rarely on their own. Players, coaches, and most hockey staff work for the NHL parent club. The AHL club's own staff runs the business side.
