Baseball's front offices went on a hiring run as the season ended
Baseball operations postings nearly tripled from August to September. Across the rest of the industry, hiring cooled as arenas finished staffing up for the NBA and NHL seasons.
Baseball operations hiring rose 161%
Clubs that hired in both months posted 73 baseball operations roles in September, up from 28 in August: scouts, analysts, player development and research jobs. MLB postings overall rose 46%. The weeks after the regular season are when front offices staff up for next year.
Postings per month, August against September
Overall hiring dipped 8% as arenas finished staffing up
Among the 166 employers that posted in both months, postings fell from 1,886 to 1,742. The drop is game-day work. Food and beverage postings fell 48% and events roles fell 33%, because NBA and NHL buildings did that hiring in August.

Technology is the steady grower
Software and product roles rose 18% and analytics roles rose 13% in a month when most departments shrank. Senior-level postings rose 8% while entry-level postings fell 14%. Entry-level and internship roles are still just over half of all sports jobs, at 52%.
Betting companies pay nearly double what NHL clubs do
The typical full-time salary at a sports betting company is $144,000. At an NHL club it is $79,000. The gap is mostly the mix of jobs: betting companies hire engineers, and clubs hire sales and operations staff.
