Position Summary

The Washington Nationals are seeking an Affiliate Pitching Coach to lead the daily development of pitchers within one of our Minor League affiliates while helping build a world-class pitching pipeline.

Working closely with the Director of Pitching, Pitching Coordinators, Special Assistant, Pitching, affiliate staff, and Player Development leadership, this role is responsible for implementing the Nationals' pitching philosophy, developing individualized plans, and creating an environment where players consistently improve.

The Affiliate Pitching Coach will integrate objective information, player feedback, and on-field coaching to help pitchers improve their velo, stuff, and execution, and overall performance while preparing them for success at the next level.

This role requires exceptional communication, strong leadership, attention to detail, and ability to collaborate across Pitching, Medical, Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition, Sports Science, and Performance departments to ensure every pitcher has an aligned development plan.

The ideal candidate is an elite teacher, relationship builder, and communicator who can balance player development with competition while creating an environment built on accountability, curiosity, and continual improvement.

This position will be based at one of the Washington Nationals' Minor League affiliates.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Implement the Washington Nationals pitching philosophy and organizational standards daily.
  • Develop individualized pitching plans (IDPs) that align player strengths, organizational priorities, and long-term Major League success.
  • Lead bullpen sessions, catch play, game planning, between-start routines, and post-game reviews.
  • Use objective information including pitch data, biomechanics, workload monitoring, and performance metrics to guide player development.
  • Teach pitch design, pitch usage, execution, sequencing, and game strategy in alignment with organizational standards.
  • Monitor daily throwing workloads and communicate player readiness, health concerns, and workload recommendations with Medical and Performance staffs.
  • Collaborate daily with Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition, Athletic Training, Sports Science, and affiliate coaching staffs to ensure one consistent message is delivered to every player.
  • Provide honest, timely, and actionable feedback while creating an environment built on trust and accountability.
  • Prepare players for advancement by reinforcing consistent routines, preparation habits, and professional expectations.
  • Complete player plans, advance planning, and organizational communication in a timely manner.
  • Assist with offseason planning, Spring Training, camps, and other Player Development initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to develop pitchers in a high-performance baseball environment.
  • Strong understanding of pitching mechanics, pitch design, pitch usage, workload management, and long-term player development.
  • Ability to teach complex concepts in a simple, actionable manner.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with players, coaches, and support staff.
  • Comfortable using objective information, technology, and performance data to support coaching decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple players and individualized plans simultaneously.
  • Collaborative mindset with a willingness to work across multiple departments in support of player development.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Prior coaching experience in professional baseball, collegiate baseball, or a comparable high-performance environment.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Compensation

The projected annual salary for this position is $65,000-$95,000. Actual pay is based on several factors, including but not limited to the applicant’s: qualifications, skills, expertise, education/training, certifications, and other organization requirements. Starting salaries for new employees are frequently not at the top of the applicable salary range.
