Reporting to our Senior Manager, Accounting, the Senior Accountant will be responsible for the preparation of complex financial data and the execution of monthly accounting duties to ensure accuracy with GAAP. This position requires critical thinking and an understanding of technical accounting functions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Sponsorship Revenue:
- Own the accounting and financial tracking of sponsorship agreements, including contract review, billing, revenue recognition, deferred revenue, accounts receivable, and monthly reconciliation to the general ledger.
- Maintain a comprehensive sponsorship contract schedule detailing contract value, billing terms, revenue recognition periods, deliverables, amounts billed, amounts collected, revenue recognized, and deferred revenue.
- Review sponsorship agreements and amendments to identify changes that may impact billing, revenue recognition, or financial reporting, and coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and timely accounting.
- Reconcile sponsorship contract activity to accounts receivable, cash receipts, revenue, and deferred revenue and investigate discrepancies.
Inventory & Merchandise Revenue:
- Own the accounting and reconciliation process for merchandise revenue, inventory, and COGS, including the reconciliation of Shopify and other sales channels to NetSuite.
- Perform monthly reconciliations of merchandise revenue, inventory, COGS, payment clearing accounts, and related balance sheet accounts; investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Reconcile Shopify sales and inventory activity to NetSuite, including gross sales, discounts, refunds, returns, gift cards, payment settlements, inventory movements, and COGS.
- Analyze inventory balances and transactions, including purchases, receipts, sales, returns, adjustments, shrinkage, and write-offs, and ensure appropriate accounting treatment under company policy and US GAAP.
- Partner with Merchandise department to resolve inventory and revenue discrepancies and improve the accuracy and efficiency of the order-to-cash and inventory accounting process
Fixed Assets
- Own the Company's fixed asset accounting process, including capitalization, depreciation, transfers, disposals, CIP, monthly reconciliations, physical verification, and financial reporting.
- Prepare and review monthly fixed asset reconciliations between the fixed asset subledger and general ledger; investigate variances and ensure timely resolution.
- Evaluate capital expenditures for proper capitalization and classification, ensuring costs, useful lives, in-service dates, and depreciation methods are appropriately recorded.
- Manage the month-end fixed asset close, including depreciation, additions, disposals, CIP transfers, and related journal entries.
- Maintain supporting schedules and documentation for internal and external audits and ensure compliance with fixed asset accounting policies and internal controls.
- Partner with AP, Operations, and other departments to ensure capital expenditures and asset activity are identified and recorded accurately and timely.
Accounts Receivable:
- Own the Company's accounts receivable accounting process, including invoicing, cash application, collections, customer account reconciliations, credit memos, write-offs, aging analysis, and AR reporting.
- Manage the month-end AR close, including AR-to-GL reconciliation, cash application, aging review, bad debt/allowance calculations, journal entries, and supporting schedules.
- Monitor the AR aging and collection activity, identify delinquent accounts, investigate customer concerns, and communicate significant collection issues to management.
Financial Operations & Strategy:
- Perform core accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, journal entry preparation, and month-end close processes.
- Partner with multiple departments to gain an understanding of specific transactions and identify proper accounting procedures.
- Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency; draft and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Contribute to the development of the team's financial strategy and goals.
- Provide recommendations for improving financial performance and efficiency.
- Other projects and analysis as required.
Audit and Compliance:
- Assist with annual audits (financial, tax, business tax, agreed upon procedures) including samples, support schedules, analysis questions and other requirements.
- Ensure all audit findings are addressed promptly and accurately.
- Support with the preparation of MLS specific reporting.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates can meet the requirements for this role with a combination of skills, education and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. CPA certification preferred.
- 3+ years of progressive experience with experience in sports or entertainment industry preferred.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and reporting standards.
- Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems, preferably NetSuite.
- Proficiency working with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Passion for soccer and a good understanding of MLS operations is a plus.
