Position Summary

The National Crosschecker serves as a senior evaluator of amateur pitchers and position players throughout the United States. The position provides independent evaluations of priority prospects, compares players across regions and competition levels, and delivers recommendations that directly inform the Club’s draft priorities and player acquisition decisions. The role combines baseball judgment with video, performance data, and input from colleagues across Baseball Operations.

Working closely with area scouting supervisors, the other national crosschecker, Scouting leadership, and Research and Development, this position strengthens the consistency and depth of the Club’s evaluations. National assignments follow prospect priorities across all regions and are not limited to a designated area territory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

National Evaluation and Projection
  • Independently evaluate priority high school, junior college, and college prospects through live games, workouts, showcases, tournaments, and video review; maintain awareness of future draft classes.
  • Assess position-player tools, including hitting, power, running, fielding, and throwing, and project physical development, defensive position, and potential Major League role.
  • Evaluate pitchers’ repertoires, pitch characteristics, command, control, delivery, athleticism, and ability to adjust; project potential starting or relief roles and development needs.
  • Compare prospects across geographic regions, ages, and levels of competition using the Club’s grading standards, clearly distinguishing present ability, future projection, and uncertainty.
Evidence and Scouting Reports
  • Integrate live observations with video, performance history, pitch and ball-tracking information, and research findings; account for competition quality, sample size, and data limitations.
  • Investigate meaningful differences between scouting reports and analytical projections with Research and Development; identify what additional information could change the evaluation.
  • Submit timely reports with grades, supporting observations, projected roles, risk factors, and recommendations. Document material changes in opinion and the evidence behind them.
  • Gather and verify relevant background and makeup information with area scouts, distinguishing observed behavior from unverified reports. Route authorized medical information through designated Club personnel.
Draft Preparation and Collaboration
  • Build and maintain national preference lists and contribute to the overall draft board, comparing pitchers and position players in the context of upside, likely outcomes, risk, and acquisition value.
  • Present and defend recommendations in scouting and draft meetings; challenge assumptions constructively, consider contrary evidence, and preserve meaningful differences of opinion for leadership review.
  • Coordinate coverage with the other national crosschecker and area scouts to prioritize additional looks, reduce unnecessary duplication, and resolve information gaps before key decisions.
  • Communicate with area scouts and leadership about player interest, commitments, and signability. Support authorized draft and signing activities within assigned responsibilities.
  • Share evaluation methods and provide constructive feedback to area scouts. Participate in post-draft reviews to improve future evaluations and hand off relevant observations to Player Development.
  • Manage travel plans and expenses within Club guidelines; respond to schedule changes and emerging priorities. Protect confidential information, follow Club and MLB policies, and complete other assigned scouting projects.

Qualifications

  • Typically seven or more years of professional scouting or comparable high-level player evaluation experience, including substantial amateur scouting and draft preparation.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate both pitchers and position players, compare prospects across territories, and support recommendations with independent judgment and evidence.
  • Strong knowledge of the amateur baseball calendar, MLB Draft process, scouting grades, and player projection. Prior cross-checking or comparable multi-region responsibility preferred.
  • Clear writing and presentation skills; sound judgment, curiosity, organization, and willingness to revise conclusions. Ability to build trust and influence colleagues without direct authority.
  • Proficiency with electronic scouting systems, video, spreadsheets, and relevant evaluation technology. Bachelor’s degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to drive and travel extensively; valid driver’s license and driving record meeting Club requirements. An MVR will be performed annually.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This senior individual contributor has no direct reports and provides evaluation leadership and mentoring. Scouting leadership retains final authority over coverage, draft selections, signing commitments, and personnel decisions.

Work Environment Schedule and Physical Requirements

This field-based position requires extensive nationwide automobile and air travel, frequent overnight stays, and attendance at Club facilities as assigned. Peak scouting periods involve increased travel. Work regularly includes nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and schedule changes on short notice.

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. These functions regularly include:

  • Attend assigned games, workouts, showcases, meetings, and scouting events in indoor and outdoor settings and varying weather conditions.
  • Remain seated for extended periods while traveling, observing games, reviewing video, or completing reports; stand and walk at scouting venues.
  • Navigate stadium seating, stairs, and uneven outdoor surfaces as required for assigned coverage.
  • Observe and evaluate live and recorded baseball activity; operate computers, mobile devices, video equipment, and standard scouting technology.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and external contacts in person and through telephone, video, and electronic platforms.

The Colorado Rockies will provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities in accordance with applicable law.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated annual base salary range is $100,000–$150,000. Individual offers will reflect relevant experience, demonstrated evaluation expertise, job-related skills, geographical location and internal equity. This is a regular-status, full-time position.
