Job description

Department: Strategy & Analytics
Reports To: Vice President, Strategy & Analytics
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Work Arrangement: Hybrid

Overview

The Strategy Analyst owns the analysis behind the biggest business decisions facing one of the NHL’s most storied franchises. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Strategy & Analytics, you will work alongside senior executives on decisions that shape the organization’s economics and fan experience for years to come. You will also run the organization’s annual strategic planning process. This is a newly created role, meaning you will help define how strategy is built across the organization.

Unlike a traditional advisory role, you will see your recommendations through to decision and implementation, and measure the results. This role is ideal for a consultant or strategist with an exceptional analytical foundation who wants to go beyond advising on decisions to making them happen, and who is passionate about hockey and the business of sports

Key Responsibilities

Critical Business Decisions (approximately 60% of the role)
  • Serve as the lead analyst on the organization’s highest-stakes decisions (revenue models, capital allocation, build vs. partner) across the business
  • Frame the key questions, build the financial and market models, develop options, and deliver a clear recommendation to senior executives
  • Build executive-level presentations outlining the options, tradeoffs, and rationale behind each decision
  • Work with key external partners to ensure operating results are realized across all stakeholders
  • After a decision is made, track realized results against the original business case to help build a culture of continuous improvement

Market and Financial Analysis (approximately 25% of the role)
  • Conduct market research and competitive benchmarking to identify industry trends, fan preferences, and emerging business opportunities that inform key decisions
  • Draw on survey, CRM, ticketing, and other business data to understand fan behavior and where to invest
  • Partner with Finance and departmental leaders to develop business cases, return-on-investment analyses, and forecasts for major initiatives

Annual Strategic Planning (approximately 15% of the role)
  • Design and run a scalable and sustainable annual strategic planning process at the enterprise and department levels, from setting priorities with executive leadership through implementation plans
  • Establish the review cadence and reporting used to track progress against priorities
  • Translate the long-term outlook for the Pittsburgh market and our fan base into planning assumptions and priorities
  • Support executive leadership in articulating the organization’s long-term priorities and the rationale behind them

Required Qualifications

  • Approximately 2 years of experience in management consulting, corporate strategy, investment banking, or corporate development
  • Demonstrated ability to structure ambiguous problems quickly and develop clear, creative recommendations for senior leaders
  • Advanced financial modeling and analytical skills, with deep proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint and experience building business cases
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing and presenting executive-level materials
  • Ability to lead and collaborate in a consultative role at all levels of an organization, including senior leadership
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Genuine passion for hockey and the business of sports

What You’ll Gain

  • A newly created role, with the chance to shape how strategy is built and to define the organization’s planning process from the ground up
  • Ownership of your work from analysis through decision and implementation, with direct exposure to senior leadership and the chance to see the impact early in your career
  • Live, consequential problems in a rapidly changing industry
  • Broad exposure to every part of a professional sports business
