Job Summary
The Pirates are looking for a strategic and collaborative leader to join our team as Director, Talent Development. This is a newly created role that will impact everything we do in Baseball Operations.
At the Pirates, we know that people are the key to our success. You'll lead our efforts to build year-round talent pipelines, strengthen recruiting, selection, and assessment practices, create development pathways, and partner with leaders across the department to build organizational and leadership capability. You'll also work closely with People & Culture to ensure these efforts meet the unique needs of Baseball Operations while aligning with organizational practices and priorities.

Responsibilities:
Talent Identification & Pipelines
- Develop and maintain year-round talent maps and pipelines for priority Baseball Operations positions.
- Proactively identify emerging and high-performing talent throughout professional baseball and other relevant talent markets.
- Partner with Baseball Operations leaders to anticipate future capability and staffing needs.
Selection & Assessment
- Develop Baseball-specific interview questions and evaluation criteria within the organization's broader selection framework.
- Help Baseball Operations leaders strengthen interviewing and candidate-assessment capabilities.
- Participate in interviews and provide talent recommendations.
- Partner with leaders to establish clear selection criteria before searches begin.
- Evaluate hiring outcomes and identify opportunities to improve selection effectiveness.
Talent & Career Development
- Develop career and development pathways for Baseball Operations populations, including scouts, coaches and other specialized functions.
- Facilitate individual development planning and provide 1:1 development support.
- Design and coordinate Baseball-specific leadership cohorts and development programs.
- Create opportunities for cross-functional exposure, stretch assignments and career progression.
Performance & Organizational Effectiveness
- Implement and reinforce the organization's performance-management framework within Baseball Operations.
- Coach Baseball Operations leaders on goal setting, continuous feedback, development planning and effective performance conversations.
- Facilitate Baseball Operations talent and succession discussions.
- Partner with Baseball Operations leadership and P&C on organizational design, team effectiveness and leadership-structure needs.
- Ensure our workplace is inclusive and welcoming for everyone, identifying and removing obstacles to success.
Qualifications:
- Authorized to work lawfully in the United States.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- Ability to build programs or practices that identify talent, support individual development, strengthen leadership capability, or create career pathways.
- Ability to understand organizational needs, develop practical solutions, and lead initiatives from concept through implementation.
- Strong coaching, facilitation, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to earn trust and influence leaders at multiple levels.
Travel and Schedule:
- Periodic domestic and international travel is required, including travel to Pirates facilities and other Baseball Operations locations. Travel frequency may vary throughout the year based on organizational needs.
- Must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, or other non-traditional hours based on the baseball calendar, travel, and departmental needs.
