Job description

SUMMARY: The Assistant Athletic Trainer is an integral member of the New England Revolution Sports Medicine and Performance team, providing comprehensive medical care and supporting athlete health, injury prevention, rehabilitation, recovery, and return-to-play activities. Working collaboratively with the Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer, team physicians, Performance staff, and Technical staff, the position provides clinical care and coordinates medical services across training, competition, and travel.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer also supports Sports Medicine operations, including medical documentation, supplies and equipment, and educational programs for students, seasonal staff, and fellows. The position requires strong clinical judgment, organization, communication, and collaboration within a high-performance professional sports environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide comprehensive athletic training services for New England Revolution athletes, including injury and illness prevention, evaluation, immediate and emergency care, treatment, therapeutic intervention, and ongoing clinical management within established medical protocols and scope of practice.
  2. Develop and progress individualized rehabilitation programs in collaboration with the Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer, team physicians, Head of Rehabilitation, and Performance staff, supporting athletes through rehabilitation, recovery, and return-to-play/return-to-performance progression.
  3. Monitor athlete health and rehabilitation status, maintain accurate and timely medical documentation, and communicate relevant clinical information to appropriate Sports Medicine, Performance, and Technical staff in accordance with medical privacy requirements.
  4. Coordinate athlete medical care, including physician appointments, diagnostic imaging, specialist consultations, referrals, medical screenings, health assessments, and other clinical services as appropriate.
  5. Provide athletic training and medical coverage for team training, strength and conditioning sessions, matches, travel, training camp, and other assigned team activities throughout the preseason, regular season, postseason, and offseason.
  6. Manage assigned Sports Medicine operational resources, including medical and rehabilitation supplies, equipment, inventory, vendor coordination, and related expenditures, ensuring resources are available and maintained in accordance with department requirements.
  7. Coordinate and oversee the club's athletic training student, internship, seasonal, and fellowship programs, including recruitment support, onboarding, work and clinical assignments, scheduling, education, mentorship, supervision, and evaluation in collaboration with Sports Medicine leadership.
  8. Support departmental compliance, clinical quality, and continuous improvement by maintaining established MLS, club, medical, safety, and privacy requirements and contributing to research, education, evidence-based practice, and operational improvements.
  9. Maintain a safe, organized, and professional athletic training environment and serve as a clinical resource to athletes and Sports Medicine personnel within assigned areas of responsibility.
  10. Special projects and assignments as business dictates.
  11. Responsible for the maintenance, creation and control of all personally identifiable information or any other information protected by any Confidentiality or Privacy Standards or Company Policies that you have access or knowledge of, including but not limited to any state or federal regulations including HIPAA.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related healthcare field from an accredited institution.
  • At least 2-4 years of professional experience as an Athletic Trainer with a minimum of 2 years working in collegiate, professional, international, or other elite-level athletics; professional soccer experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in injury evaluation, emergency care, rehabilitation, therapeutic intervention, recovery, and return-to-play/return-to-performance progression.
  • Experience working collaboratively within an integrated sports medicine and performance model involving physicians, athletic trainers, rehabilitation professionals, strength and conditioning/performance staff, and other specialists.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records, injury-tracking systems, and clinical documentation.
  • Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to independently manage multiple athlete-care priorities within established medical protocols.
  • Experience mentoring and developing athletic training students, interns, seasonal staff, or fellows; experience coordinating clinical education programs preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with athletes, medical providers, coaches, Performance staff, and other stakeholders while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of applicable professional standards, medical documentation and privacy requirements, and sports medicine policies relevant to professional athletics.
  • Experience coordinating sports medicine supplies, equipment, vendors, or other clinical resources preferred.
  • Spanish-language proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other nontraditional hours as required by the team's schedule.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and provide hands-on athletic training and rehabilitation services.
  • Must be able to assist athletes with therapeutic and functional activities and move or utilize medical, rehabilitation, and athletic-training equipment consistent with the essential functions of the position.
  • Must be able to work for extended periods in indoor and outdoor training and competition environments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in office, athletic training, and indoor and outdoor training and competition environments, including varying weather conditions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Current Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC) certification required.
  • Current Massachusetts Athletic Trainer license required, or ability to obtain prior to beginning employment.
  • Current CPR/AED certification for the Professional Rescuer required.
  • SafeSport Certified required.
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) preferred.
  • Dry Needling Certification preferred.
