Position Summary
The Technology Integration Director Local Media leads the technical design and execution of innovative broadcast workflows and production solutions supporting NBA and WNBA Local Media. This role is about what is both new and next, whether that be in front of the camera, on camera and in the production trucks and control rooms. Reporting to the Technology Innovation Lead, this role translates strategic content and production vision into scalable technical requirements, implementation roadmaps, and operational workflows across live event and studio environments.
Serving as a senior technical subject matter expert within Local Media, the Technical Director takes a hands-on role in designing, evaluating, testing, and implementing new broadcast technologies, infrastructure, and deployments. This individual evaluates technical feasibility, system dependencies, operational readiness, implementation risks, and cost considerations, and provides recommendations to determine how and when new production capabilities can be deployed at scale.
The role works closely with Production, Content Planning, Broadcast Strategy and the broader GPM Media Operations & Technology organization, as well as Local Media and GPM Broadcast Engineering teams, Production Operations, and external broadcast technology vendors. The Technical Director bridges production vision and technical execution, ensuring innovative concepts are translated into reliable, supportable, and cost-effective technical solutions for demanding live broadcast environments.
Major Responsibilities
Broadcast Technology Design & Implementation
- Lead the technical design, architecture, and implementation of next-generation content creation, new broadcast workflows and production capabilities across Local Media broadcast environments.
- Translate priorities established by the Broadcast Technology Innovation Lead’s strategic vision and production roadmap into technical requirements, solution designs, implementation plans, and deployment milestones.
- Serve as a hands-on technical expert in the design and buildout of local broadcast infrastructure, systems, integrations, and workflows, working in coordination with the engineering and operational teams that own the production environment.
- Evaluate existing content and production environments to identify opportunities to modernize infrastructure, simplify workflows, improve reliability, increase scalability, enhance production capabilities, and develop the next new innovative content.
- Design and operationalize solutions incorporating cloud and IP-based production, REMI workflows, automation, AI-enabled production, advanced graphics, data integration, virtual production, and other emerging broadcast capabilities.
- Develop technical requirements, system diagrams, workflow documentation, test plans, and operational specifications necessary to move solutions from concept through production deployment.
- Lead proofs of concept, pilots, testing, and technical validation; of new technologies, ensuring solutions meet production, engineering, security, reliability, and operational requirements.
- Partner with Broadcast Engineering and Production Operations to transition approved capabilities into stable production environments with appropriate monitoring, support, redundancy, documentation, and operational readiness.
Technical Planning & Evaluation
- Develop technical roadmaps by translating longer-term production strategies into sequenced technology initiatives that outline infrastructure defining requirements, dependencies, sequencing, and implementation plans. Assess the technical feasibility and operational impact of proposed content and production innovations, proactively identifying architecture constraints, integration requirements, risks, dependencies, and readiness considerations.
- Develop technical cost estimates and resource requirements for proposed solutions, including CapEx, OpEx, vendor, infrastructure, connectivity, and ongoing support considerations.
- Support the Technology Innovation Lead in evaluating investment opportunities and business cases by providing technical inputs into cost, implementation, complexity, scalability, expected benefits, and ROI.
- Identify opportunities to use shared GPM infrastructure, platforms, capabilities, and vendor relationships within established technical and operational standards.
- Research emerging broadcast technologies, assess their maturity, applicability, and potential value within Local Media use cases, and recommend focused evaluations or pilots.
Cross-Functional Technical Delivery
- Serve as the technical liaison between Local Media, Broadcast Strategy, GPM Media Operations & Technology, Broadcast Engineering, Production Operations, and other technical stakeholders.
- Work directly with broadcast technology vendors and strategic partners to evaluate solutions, define technical requirements, validate architectures, resolve technical issues, and support implementation.
- Partner with Local Media and broader GPM Broadcast Engineering teams to ensure solutions align with technical standards, infrastructure strategy, security requirements, and support models.
- Provide technical leadership during implementation and live-production readiness, troubleshooting complex technical issues and coordinating resolution or escalation across internal teams and vendors.
- Create and maintain technical standards, documentation, operating guidance, and best practices that enable innovative production workflows to scale consistently across Local Media environments.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to Local Media leadership, clearly communicating technical tradeoffs, implementation risks, resource needs, and recommendations to advance the production experience.
Required Education / Professional Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Media Technology, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent relevant experience considered.
- 7+ years of progressive experience in broadcast engineering, production technology, media technology, systems engineering, or related technical fields.
- Demonstrated experience designing or supporting the implementation of technical infrastructure and production workflows within live broadcast environments.
- Hands-on experience with broadcast systems architecture, systems integration, signal and media workflows, IP-based infrastructure, and live production technology.
- Demonstrated experience taking new technologies from technical evaluation and proof of concept through implementation and production deployment.
- Experience with cloud production, remote/REMI production, automation, advanced graphics, data integration, virtual production, and/or other emerging broadcast technologies.
- Experience partnering with broadcast engineering teams, production organizations, technology vendors, and systems integrators on complex implementations.
- Experience developing technical requirements, implementation plans, cost estimates, and technology roadmaps.
- Live sports production experience strongly preferred.
Required Skills / Knowledge Attributes
- Strong technical knowledge of live broadcast infrastructure, production systems, broadcast engineering, and modern media workflows.
- Strong understanding of IP and cloud-based production architectures, remote production models, signal transport, systems integration, redundancy, monitoring, and live production reliability.
- Ability to translate creative, production, and business objectives into practical, scalable technical solutions and implementation roadmaps.
- Strong systems-thinking capabilities with the ability to understand dependencies across production, infrastructure, connectivity, software, vendors, and operational workflows.
- Demonstrated ability to assess technical feasibility, implementation risk, operational readiness, scalability, and cost implications of new technologies and production approaches.
- Strong analytical and financial acumen with the ability to contribute to CapEx/OpEx planning, vendor evaluation, cost-benefit analysis, and ROI assessments.
- Strong technical project leadership skills with the ability to drive complex implementations across engineering teams, vendors, and operational stakeholders without direct authority.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts, tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Highly innovative technical mindset balanced by a strong focus on reliability, operational readiness, scalability, and practical implementation.
