THE POSITION 

In close partnership with the NHL and NHLPA, the Executive Director, World Cup of Hockey is responsible to manage and oversee all event logistics pertaining specifically to Calgary’s involvement with the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. This role will also manage and oversee special events scheduled in and around the festival as assigned, as well as coordinate all volunteer & staffing requirements for each of the activations.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Develop and oversee all Calgary plans related to the World Cup of Hockey.
  • Hire, supervise, and lead staff team.
  • Ensure all operations and commitment are carried out in accordance with approved plans and timelines.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member on relevant committees.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the NHL, NHLPA and CSEC on aspects of the World Cup of Hockey portfolio that are outside of the event scope to ensure seamless integration of operations.
  • Manage collaboration and shared resources with in-house CSEC and NHL staff.
  • Manager overall budget; providing frequent reports to Executive Sponsor and CSEC President & CEO.
  • Develop vendor/RFP processes, utilize cost control strategies during all contract negations, and implement environmentally sustainable asset dispose practices into procurement processes.
  • Oversee fund development, working closely with CSEC and NHL sales teams, ensuring effective corporate sponsorship and fundraising program is in place to meet targets and achieve fulfillment/servicing requirements of all parties.
  • Oversee risk management, working closely with CSEC and NFL on risk mitigation, crisis management, and legal services.
  • Lead and manage external partnerships including, but not limited to the Government of Alberta, City of Calgary, Alberta Health Services, Tourism Calgary, Calgary Downtown Association, Calgary Arts Development, as well as other Provincially and Federal programs and organizations.
  • Ensure all marketing and public relations activities support the overall goals of the 2028 World Cup of Hockey and its partners and are consistent with the NHL brand guidelines, with long-term impact considerations that support the growth and sustainability of the C of Red fan base.
  • Actively participate in safety programs and follow polices;
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

THE INDIVIDUAL 

The ideal individual will have the following background:

  • 5+ years’ experience organizing and on-site execution of special events
  • Must possess excellent organizational, strategic, planning and implementation skills
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations
  • Able to create work-back schedules, critical paths and meet deadlines under stress and interruptions
  • Ability to assign and delegate work, problem solve, answer questions and evaluate results of performance
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe products, Google Docs and / or Smart Sheets
  • Knowledge of event supplies, event equipment, and/or service ordering, as well as inventory control of these items
  • Experience in managing third-party vendors and contractors
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment

Certifications

  • Post-secondary education is considered an asset.
