Position Overview
Hornets Sports & Entertainment (HSE) is seeking a Coordinator of Communications to support the organization’s business and communications objectives through the execution of public relations and communications initiatives across the organization.
Working closely with members of the communications department, the coordinator will assist with day-to-day communications activities and help promote key organizational initiatives across areas including marketing, partnerships, community impact, ticket sales, arena operations and retail. Responsibilities will include drafting and editing communications materials, supporting media relations efforts, coordinating publicity opportunities, conducting research, monitoring media coverage and assisting with departmental projects and events.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer and editor who is organized, detail-oriented, resourceful and able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. This individual should have an interest in public relations and storytelling, an understanding of what makes a strong media story and a willingness to proactively identify story ideas and communications opportunities for consideration by the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the execution of communications and public relations plans designed to promote HSE business initiatives, including community impact, ticket sales, marketing, corporate partnerships, arena management, retail and other organizational priorities.
- Research, draft, proofread and edit press releases, media advisories, talking points, briefing materials, pitches, promotional materials and other communications content.
- Assist with media relations efforts, including developing and maintaining media lists, distributing communications materials, coordinating interview requests and supporting media outreach.
- Assist with the development and execution of creative publicity opportunities designed to generate positive awareness and media coverage for HSE and its initiatives.
- Support the organization’s Community Impact and Foundation initiatives, including drafting scripts, talking points, media materials and other communications content and assisting with media relations surrounding programs and events.
- Contribute to the development of organizational and departmental messaging, including campaign-specific communications and supporting materials.
- Support communications efforts for the Novant Health Performance Center, including drafting materials, coordinating media opportunities and assisting with related communications initiatives.
- Coordinate logistics for media interviews, press conferences, announcements, community events, photo opportunities and other media-related activities.
- Research media outlets, reporters, industry trends and relevant news topics to support departmental pitching and publicity efforts.
- Maintain and update media contact lists, communications calendars, project trackers and other departmental resources.
- Assist with award submissions, nominations, organizational rankings and other recognition opportunities, including researching opportunities, gathering information and drafting submission materials.
- Compile and distribute media coverage reports and assist with developing post-event, campaign and announcement recaps.
- Track communications activities and earned media results to help evaluate the effectiveness and reach of publicity efforts.

Required Skills, Experience, and Abilities
To perform the job successfully, you will have or demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, sports management, English or related field preferred
- Excellent communication skills including writing, editing and verbal; ability to present ideas clearly and concisely
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Knowledge of AP style
- Experience with sports writing, research, feature writing, editing and transcription
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Previous experience with a professional sports team, college sports information office or school newspaper preferred
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize when given clearly defined goals and objectives
- You are organized, detailed and demonstrate an ability to handle multiple projects with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion when privy to sensitive information
- Ability to be a flexible and reliable teammate, both within the department and the company as a whole
- Ability to present self in professional manner and interact with all levels of the organization and outside contacts
- Ability to work extended hours on occasion, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to attend company events when necessary
